Seweing Compendium

#1850 Pewter with Cobalt Blue Glass Imported from England Bobbin inside has sections for two different threads and holds two needles. A small thimble is on top. All is held together with a “forest of Flowers” collar.

In the last half of the 18th century it was fashionable to meet to sew with friends thus creating a need for a set of easy to carry sewing tools. One of the earliest of these was the “tower type compendium”. Such sewing kits were ideal to take along when visiting friends.
